joining us tonight im tim seaman jenna: and im jenna rehnstrom. going to the doctor can be an anxiety filled event. tim: add in a procedure like a colonoscopy, and for many folks it's a recipe for avoiding the doctor. tim with monitor but march is colon cancer awareness month, and so tongiht we're going to try and lessen some of the uneasyness. when i recently had my first colonoscopy .... the folks at dunes surgical hospital allowed abc9 to bring cameras along. while the video you are about to see isn't graphic, it is actual video of my procedure. it's our hope after watching this report, you'll think again about putting off your first colonoscopy. dr. michalak: "in your case there's not a lot to talk about becasue i didn;t see alot which is what i love to find. healthy guy comes in he's got a healthy colon. could have been a 22 year old," said dr. michalak.

hoping for. a clean bill of colon health. it all started with a reutine visit to my family doctor. dr. bryce robisonl: " we'll call dr. michalak's office my nurse will come back give you a date and time and his prep," said dr. bryce robison. colonoscopy's are recommended for anyone over ager 50. nats "tim seaman, moviprep. any questions?" and process starts by cleaning out the colon. bad stories about the "prep" made me less than excited to schedule a procedure.... but dr. jeff michalak assured me times are changing. dr. jeff michalak "none of them taste fantastic, but the newer preps like movipr that you used is less volumn. splittin prep isnt the standard of care but it will be," said dr. jeff michalak. tim seaman: (broll checking getting to

waiting game until the next morning. dr. michalak: "i want it to be the most boring day i have ever seen. where i come in and there's nothgin. no polyps. i come back we give good news and everybody leaves happy but that's not the reality of it unfortunately," said dr. michalak. tim seaman: the staff at dunes surgical hospital was ready and waiting. after checkin, paperwork and an i-v used to put me to sleep.... i was ready for my first colonoscopy. dr. jeff michalak: "let me know when you're ready, i'm ready. ok lets do it... tell me your birtrtay one mor time" tim seaman: the doctor uses water and air to maneuver his scope to the end of my colon.... that's when the real work begins. dr. jeff michalak: "almost like a slinky. spread it out and go

way out to get to look at each fold," said michalak. nats "prep is good. yea. prep is great," said the doctor. tim seaman: the human colon is made up of multiple folds. dr. jeff michalak: "when we take the scope out it should not be quicker than 6 minutes so that it gives us time to look between the folds," said the doctor. nats pop dr. jeff michalak: "if you come around the turn and dont look up there you could miss something," said the doctor. now our scopes are getting better," added michalak. tim seaman: adanoma's are polyp's that over time can become cancerous if not removed. luckily the doc didn't find any on on this day. dr. michalak: "well good, what i like to see, nice and boring," said michalak. "that prep was fantastic, ya know im not soing to lie he might have been the perfect colon. one minute inibation and 6 minute withdrawl. nine minutes total. he's got to be a role model for all people taking prep," said dr. michalak. "zero discomfort in the procedure. i already feel good, i dont feel sick i dont feel anything. there's no reason someone shouldn't have this done," said seaman. and i get a 10 year pass until i need to be screened again. dr.jeff michalak: "no one that put it off and had a problem says oh yea i'm glad i did. everybody says i wish i would have done it sooner, and now we know that at teh age of 50 there's an increase risk of cancer," said michalak. "everyone who's had it done says it like you it wasnt that bad, so if we can get people throigh that fear, get people that the prep isnt that bad, sadation is a lot better and everything is taken care of at that time," said michalak. (nats driving away) without a clean colon, the doctor can't do his job. dr. michalak works out of several facilities, i had my colonoscopy at tim - jenna on cam need to thank dr.
